A couple of weeks ago I did an interview with the magazine for travelers and photographer called "Nomadict". They specialize in creating custom made visual and written content specially designed to be used on social media. We had a great time chatting about my thoughts and experience with photography and how the future looks like moving forward. Enjoy!
Where does your passion for travel and photography come from?
When I was young, my parents would always take me traveling either in the country or abroad whenever we all had time. My mom believed that traveling would make a man whole, and I think that’s true. Most of places that we have been to were outdoor and had beautiful landscapes, as opposed to museums or city views. I think this kind of experience helped my pick up the hobby of shooting and capturing something that we don’t really see every day in our lives.
What is your ultimate goal when you share a photograph in social media? What emotions do you want to convey with your photography?
My ultimate goal is to encourage people to go outside and explore. I know it is so easy to stay in our comfort zone and I admit that sometimes I am like that too! But once we get out there we would realize the world is bigger than what we think and how insignificant we all are. All our perspectives or negativities would go away because the world is full of excitement and love. This is also the main emotion I want to convey through my photography. By letting my audience know how beautiful the world is out there, I want to inspire them to become more adventurous, to live their lives to the fullest.
Imagine for a sec that you have a super power: You can go back in time! What moment/time would you like to experience again?
That would be that afternoon in October 2017 when I randomly discovered a local church around the Dolomites area in Italy. The lightening was one of the most sacred I had ever seen (although I am not even religious!). With the mighty mountains in the backdrop, I could also hear cow bells, birds chirping, and the wind breezing through the grass. I found out not far away there was a bunch of locals having a little sing and dance party in a garden. I went over, introduced who I was and asked if my girlfriend and I could join. Despite the fact that we didn’t know each other before and that we did not even speak the same language, they quickly welcomed us with a beer and proposed to dance together. After this short but warm experience full of laughter and joy, I started to realized that regardless of language barrier, religious belief, citizenship, or race, we as global citizens can all unit together and appreciate what life has to offer. I would relive this moment a thousand times if I could.
Taking a look to your feed one may easily think that you really enjoy traveling and photography. If you decide to keep shooting and exploring, what would be the reasons?
One of the reasons aligns with the ultimate goal with my photography that I said earlier, to inspire people to develop a more adventurous spirit, to become their own hero. Even though photography has become part of my life, I would still enjoy what traveling brings me on the go and how it is constantly changing my life in a positive way without taking my camera with me. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie, “the secret life of Walter Mitty”, where the wildlife photographer has all the gears set up but refuses to shoot when the snow leopard comes out, and says, “sometimes I don’t shoot. If I like a moment, for me, personally, I don’t like to have the distraction of the camera. I just want to stay in it”. This line has become my motto ever since and will continuously guide me for all the adventures to come in the future!
I hope you enjoyed most of the Q&A and understood my motivations and desires for photography. If you would like to read the full version of the interview, click here for the official NOMADICT page.
